How to Hire a General Contractor in San Diego
Hiring a professional general contractor to work on your new construction or home remodel project is the most important step in the process. Any modifications you do to your home should provide lasting enjoyment and value—not create financial liabilities or regret. Enlisting the help of a qualified and experienced general contractor can mean the difference between the two.
Here are a few key factors to determine when hiring a residential general contractor to work on your home.
Is the General Contractor Licensed?
This is the biggest factor to confirm. Make sure that any contractor you’re considering is currently licensed, and no disciplinary actions are on the company’s record. All licensed general contractors are required to be licensed by the Contractors State Board in the state in which they’re operating. You can check a company’s license by visiting the Contractors State License Board (California) at www.cslb.ca.gov.
Is the General Contractor Fully Insured?
Make sure that the general contractors you’re considering are fully bonded and insured, as well as each employee who will be working on your property. If an accident should occur, e.g. a worker falls off a ladder and injures himself, the company’s insurance plan would cover any financial damages, not your insurance. This includes property damage, as well.
Does the General Contractor Have Good References?
Any building contractor worth their weight in tile will have good references and reviews for products and services rendered. Visit a contractor’s website and social media pages, and look for testimonials from satisfied clients. If there aren’t any testimonials or customer reviews to be found, ask the contractor to provide some.
Is the General Contractor Easy To Contact?
Having an open flow of communication is important in any working relationship; especially when it involves work to be done on your home. Professional general contractors should be easy to contact, and easy to speak with. Calls and emails should be answered within 1 business day. You should feel comfortable asking questions about your home construction project, and be satisfied with the answers you receive.
